Becky Lynch is WWE’s go-to woman whenever things get stale in the women’s division. However, the stature she could proudly boast today wasn’t an overnight wonder. At times, she was robbed of her moments. A major one of them includes the inaugural Women’s Money in the Bank ladder match in 2017. As the fans know, Carmella emerged as the winner. And she recently detailed what it was like behind the scenes.
While speaking on The Nikki and Brie Show, the Princess of Staten Island said that Becky Lynch was the original choice for the MITB contract. However, at the event, Mella’s sidekick, James Ellsworth, made sure that the briefcase didn’t fall into The Man’s lap. As a result, a rematch was further announced for the consequent episode of SmackDown.
Carmella said that it was going to be Becky Lynch‘s turn on the repeat. However, when they were backstage the day of that SmackDown taping, it was eventually decided that Mella’s going to retain her sobriquet of Ms. Money in the Bank. Upon hearing the final say, The Crown Princess was left baffled. She couldn’t believe her eyes. As she was yet to complete her first year on the main roster.
I know originally it was supposed to be Becky, she was winning it the second time … so then we showed up that day of and we kind of like talking through things and it was like 'and Carmella is going to win' and I'm like what? Like oh my God, like I couldn't believe it. Carmella via The Nikki and Brie Show
One would say it’s nothing but a windfall. However, in hindsight, Carmella happens to be one of the best MITB briefcase holders since it became a thing. She later cashed-in on Charlotte Flair to become the then-SmackDown Women’s Champion. The title reign was a shot in her arm, and it established The Moonwalking Trash-Talking Chick as one of the top stars WWE has had during that era.
A few months ago, Carmella became a mother. She gave birth to a baby boy. The fans thought that they’d soon get to see the Massachusetts native plot her WWE in-ring return. However, things haven’t been the same with her.
In the same interview as above, the former Women’s Tag Team Champion revealed that she’s dealing with a drop foot. She has an injury from the labor and herniated discs in her back. Mella said that she’s been limping for mobility as the top of her foot is hard to lift.
Former Women's Champion Carmella has been dealing with drop foot since giving birth, yet she's still hoping to return to the ring:

She also expressed a desire to indeed come back to wrestle once again, despite the adversities she’s faced. The 36-year-old last competed in 2023 before WrestleMania. And the wait continues for the ex-Money in the Bank winner to get back to what she does best.
